Abstract:

Science and Technology play a major role in most aspects of our daily lives both at home and at work. It affects many, if not most, policy issues of national and international importance. Science, Technology and Innovations are intricately linked to societal needs and the nation's economy in every area, especially in transportation, communication, agriculture, education, environment, health, defence and jobs. Everybody, therefore, needs some understanding of science, its accomplishments and its limitations. Understanding includes not just the facts of science but also the scientific methods and their limitations as well as an appreciations of the practical and social implications.

People are unable to know about the advancements in science and technology due to their lack of interest in science and its slow propagation and penetration amongst larger number of population in Pakistan. The need has never been greater for more effective sceince communication specifically designed to help the public and policy makers comprehend important issues involving science and technolgy. A lot of scientific information is found online inf the form of blogs, posts and videos and one cannot tell whether the information provided is authentic or not. This has created a huge gap between the general public and expert science communicators. We need to train the next generation of scientists and journalists to become better science communicators to create a culture where they are supported and rewarded for effectively communicating with the public.

The objective of this workshop is to equip the participants with core knowledge required to plan, implement and evaluate science communication activities in order to make complex science accessible to the general public. The workshop is to take place on 7th March, 2018 at the University of Punjab from 02 pm to 04 pm.

Abstract:

Khwarizmi Science Society, Lahore Astronomical Society and the Ali Institute of Education are organizing a Workshop on Astrolabe Making Workshop at the Ali Institute of Education on 27th and 28th February, 2018.

An astrolabe is an ancient astronomical computer for solving problems related to time and the position of the sun and stars in the sky. Astrolabes are used to show how the sky looks at a specific space at a given time. It is a primitive device and the astrolabe was highly developed in the Islamic world by 800. it was introduced to Europe from Islamic Spain (al-Andalus) in the early twelfth century. It was the most popular astronomical instrument till mid-seventeenth century.

Astrolabe making is a dead scientific art which once revolutionized astronomy in the medieval ages. At a time, half of the world's astrolabes were produced in Lahore. To revive this lost scientific tradition among our local scientists and historians of science and technology, three experts from Holland will visit Pakistan and supervise the workshop.

Investing in our Children's Future

KSS participates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Science Popularization
Sponsors & Collaborators:

Elementary and Secondary Education Department (E&SE) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government has planned to organize a week long summer camp across all 25 districts of the province. Along with training around 83,000 primary school teachers, the department has embarked upon providing a fun yet informative environment to the students for a week.

We are pleased to inform our Khwarizmi family that we, along with more than 10 other organizations, will be a part of this summer camp. This will be our contribution in this collective effort to provide better school environment, especially to learn science and maths. The government and non-government agencies will work in synergy so that every child across the province gets the opportunity to learn something out of his/her textbook, to learn something by experimentation.

The summer camp will be held simultaneously in 60 government schools across the province from 7th August, 2017 to 14th August 2017. Khwarizmi Science Society plans to visit five schools from 7th August to 10th August, 2017. Our team will be covering Peshawar and Kohat during the four-day long trip.

We, at Khwarizmi Science Society, hope to continue such collective efforts in order to normalize critical thinking among the teacher and the students.
